Frequently Asked Questions

You can sign up for a library card online and have access to all of our online services like e-books, digital audiobooks, and e-resources right away. You can also sign up for a physical card in any of our HCPL branches. Please note: You will need a physical card to check out items from our branches, even if you have an online card. Visit any of our branches to change your online card to a physical card.

You can manage your account through haliburton.bibliocommons.com. Register or log in with your library card number and PIN. There you can keep track of your checkouts, holds, and overdue items.

All incoming book donations go directly to the Friends of the Haliburton County Public Library. Items are offered for sale by the Friends of HCPL to raise funds to support library initiatives.

Donations must be free of conditions and follow these guidelines:

  • Due to space constraints, we can accept a maximum of 20 items at a time.
  • We accept current fiction and non-fiction books, and popular paperbacks.
  • We prefer books that have been published within the last 10 years. We may consider classic titles and older bestsellers, but only if they are in-demand and in excellent condition.

We cannot accept materials that are:

  • Worn, torn, dusty, dirty, moldy, stinky or in otherwise poor condition.
  • Books dropped off in poor condition are immediately disposed of.

We do not accept:

Magazines, Readers' Digest condensed books, National Geographic Magazines, encyclopedias, textbooks, records, cassettes, VHS tapes, or DVDs.

Please only drop off donations during our open hours at our Dysart and Minden Hills branches. These are the only two branches where the Friends of HCPL have dedicated space to review and sort incoming donations.

Donations left outside of our operating hours (including through our book drops) will be disposed of.

For books and movies which don’t fit our criteria, please consider contacting a local thrift shop about donating your items.

Please visit our Author Resources page for information on how to submit your book to us for purchase.

For more about booking meeting rooms at our Dysart and Minden branches, please visit our Room Rentals page.
