New at the Library

September 09, 2022

Step into any public library and you may hear that we support ‘lifelong learning.’ But what does that mean, exactly? For some patrons, their earliest literacy experiences began with library storytime, children’s author events, or at programs we co-host with organizations such as EarlyON Child and Family Centre. Youth engagement happens all year round, but especially during our annual Summer Reading Club, at after school programs, and special events we host and bolster with additional resources from our collection.

However, all ages come to the library because it’s a great place to access the Internet or learn something new. We have wi-fi available both inside and outside our branches. And public access computers you can use when you need them. We’re a place of study and a place that anyone can come to ask questions about the things that matter to them.

As society progresses with new technologies, we help to satisfy curiosity by providing current print and digital resources to support your journey learning about a modern device or online service. And our staff are standing by to learn with you if you need help with steps to access eBooks or require assistance on our public computers. In fact, it’s in our Vision Statement that we provide “up-to-date technology, expansive collections, and far-reaching programs.” A library reflects its community, and there should be something for everyone. Often our next greatest idea starts with you asking us a question about our programs or services. We can better meet the needs of our patrons and visitors when people speak up and give us feedback about what they’d prefer to read, or the programs they hope to attend at their library branch.

Another great way to foster lifelong learning is by joining or starting a book club. The library has a selection of nearly 80 Book Club Sets to support your group, with each kit containing multiple copies of the same title along with discussion questions. These book sets now include accessible formats when available, including a large print edition. We have just upgraded the bags to durable canvas ones which will protect them as they travel around the County for years to come.

Next time you’re in to see us at Haliburton County Public Library, ask us about our “Fun Things to Borrow,” such as sports equipment or an Ontario Parks Pass. Or check out our library and community events board to see what’s happening. In our branches we feature local art and historical photos, themed book displays on topics you may not have considered before, and we’re getting ready for Bookapalooza 2022 – an all ages, full day event happening Saturday, September 24th. Celebrating readers and writers, it’s going to be an event book-lovers and their families will not want to miss.

If you’re a new resident in the area, you can come in and sign up for a library card which gives you ever-evolving access to great resources. We’ll be glad to see you. As one staff member recently told me, “the quality of people’s lives is improved because of their library access.” Please come and see what we mean!
